Again and again, a new recipe would be perfected. Passing from one generation to the next, Albert’s perseverance and optimism would see the family candy makers through bankruptcy in 1930, as a result of the great depression and through a devastating and fiery explosion that destroyed their business in 1965.

Fun Finders visited Burnsville June 28^th

Jim and Bonnie Parr, a.k.a., “The Fun Finders”, sampled dishes and beverages from bd’s Mongolian Grill as part of the Rand McNally and USA TODAY’”Best of the Road Rally” American tour. The Florida couple taste-tested food from a dozen Burnsville restaurants, planted a tree, and toured Burnsville over the course of two days

New National Cemeteries

The Veterans Millennium Health Care and Benefits Act of 1999 requires VA to establish six additional national cemeteries in areas of the United States in which the need for burial space is greatest. Those areas are: Atlanta, Georgia; Detroit, Michigan; Miami, Florida; Sacramento, California; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Fort Sill National Cemetery near Oklahoma City opened for interments in 2001, the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies near Pittsburgh, Pa. and the Great Lakes National Cemetery near Detroit opened in 2005, the Georgia National Cemetery, and the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery opened in 2006, the South Florida National Cemetery near Miami, opened in 2007.

The National Cemetery Act of 2003 authorizes VA to establish new national cemeteries to serve veterans in the areas of Bakersfield, Calif.; Birmingham, Ala.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Sarasota County, Fla.; southeastern Pennsylvania; and Columbia-Greenville, S.C. All six areas have veteran populations exceeding 170,000, which is the threshold VA has established for new national cemeteries. Ft. Jackson, Jacksonville, Sarasota, Alabama and Bakersfield National Cemeteries opened for interments in 2009.

Technology Corner

Google Cloud – Based Music Storage

Called "Music Beta by Google," the service lets users store their tunes remotely and access them from any compatible device, including mobile phones, tablets and computers. So far, it does not offer music downloads or song sales and it doesn't let people listen to music they haven't physically uploaded.

The service will be available by invitation only starting on Tuesday, free of charge while it is being tested. Google announced the new service at its yearly conference for software developers in San Francisco. It did not say whether, or how much, it plans to charge eventually.

Cellphone alert system announced in NYC

The U.S. government and local authorities will soon be able to reach people directly on their cellphones to warn them of imminent danger or alert them about missing children - even in the middle of a widespread emergency that overloads communications systems as happened after the Sept. 11 attacks, officials said Tuesday

iPhone GPS aids in capture of car theft suspect

Police said 29-year-old Joshua Mitzelfelt allegedly stole a truck left unattended and running in a Colorado Springs driveway Tuesday morning. The owner's iPhone was on the front seat.The truck's owner began tracking his vehicle's location though a website monitoring the phone's GPS application while updating sheriff dispatchers. Officers spotted the truck about 7 miles (11 kilometers) from the owner's residence and arrested the driver.

Sony Playstation to Restore Network by the End of May

Sony also confirmed that personal data from 24.6 million user accounts was stolen in the hacker attack last month. Personal data, including credit card numbers, might have been stolen from another 77 million PlayStation accounts, said Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka.

Sony was under heavy criticism over its handling of the network intrusion. The company did not notify consumers of the breach until April 26 even though it began investigating unusual activity on the network since April 19.

Last month, U.S. lawyers filed a lawsuit against Sony on behalf of lead plaintiff Kristopher Johns for negligent protection of personal data and failure to inform players in a timely fashion that their credit card information may have been stolen. The lawsuit seeks class-action status.

Obama presses Congress on cybersecurity measures

"The cybersecurity vulnerabilities in our government and critical infrastructure are a risk to national security, public safety and economic prosperity," the White House said in a statement.

The legislative proposal from the Obama administration would require companies that suffer data breaches to report that to consumers if their personal information is stolen.

The administration also wants to force companies critical to U.S. infrastructure -- such as electric companies and big financial firms -- to develop their own plans to address security weaknesses.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would be allowed to weigh in on whether particular plans are adequate.

Microsoft deal should vastly expand reach of Skype

Microsoft already has a Skype-like service called Windows Live. But the real Skype is far more popular and bridges different computers and phones. Already, someone using the Skype application on an iPhone can talk to someone who has it installed on a Dell laptop.

For businesses, Microsoft has separate communications software. Building Skype into it would make it easier for corporate users to conduct video chats with people at other companies, or from home, said Bern Elliott, an analyst at the research firm Gartner Inc.

Skype is the largest provider of international calling services in the world, surpassing any single phone company, according to research firm TeleGeography.

The partnership would also bring Skype to the Xbox video game console and has sold 50 million copies, making it the world's No. 2 video game system behind the Nintendo Wii.

The purchase is the most expensive in Microsoft's 36-year history, eclipsing its $6 billion acquisition of online ad service aQuantive in 2007

On Friday, the board of directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees the Internet's naming system, approved the creation of a red-light district online for pornographic websites. It follows a decade-long battle over such a name.
Pornographers worry it will ghettoize their sites. Although it's meant to be voluntary, they fear governments could try to mandate the domain's use, so that pornographic content is more easily blocked.

Tech Supply Chain Takes A Hit Following Japan Catastrophe
Japan is responsible for 14 percent of global production in computers, and other consumer electronics. Japanese makers for certain parts, such as flat screen panels, have an ever stronger hold on the respective supply markets. Sixty percent of the world's silicon wafers--used in semiconductor chips--are made in Japan.
Some analysts predict it could take six months before the tech supply chain returns to normal. Plants run by Toshiba, Panasonic and Sony have already been struck with damage, forcing shutdowns of several facilities. Sony has closed at least seven factories so far.
Factory damage is not the only concern. Infrastructural issues in the country--involving roads and mandated power outages--could delay rebuilding efforts for affected plants, and also slow the speed of transportation for parts. Repairing infrastructure throughout the country could take years.

TV Dinners/Microwave Dinners – mention name is still being used although obsolete 

The term TV dinner is a generalized trademark originally used for a brand of packaged meal developed in 1953 for C.A. Swanson & Sons. (The name in full was TV Brand Frozen Dinner.) In the United States, the term is now synonymous with any prepackaged dinner purchased frozen in a supermarket and heated at home, although Swanson stopped using the name "TV Dinner" in 1962.The name TV dinner came from the shape of the tray it was served on.^[2] The main entree was in a bigger compartment on one side of the tray and the vegetables lined up in smaller compartments on the other side. The arrangement was similar to that of the front panels of a 1950s television set: a screen on the left and speakers and control on the right. There were other theories about the name of the TV dinner. One reason was that early packaging featured the image of a TV set. Another was that many families would eat these in front of a TV set.

Tang – Myth not created for space flight but used in space flight

Tang is a sweet and tangy, orange-flavored drink, from the United States. Named after the tangerine, the original orange-flavored Tang was formulated by William A. Mitchell for General Foods Corporation in 1957 and first marketed in powdered form in 1959.

It was initially intended as a breakfast drink, but sales were poor until NASA used it on Gemini flights in 1965 (researched at Natick Soldier Systems Center; Tang was heavily advertised as the drink first used on John Glenn's Mercury flight). Since then it was closely associated with the U.S. manned spaceflight program, leading to the misconception that Tang was invented for the space program. Tang was famously used by some early NASA manned space flights. In 1962, when Mercury astronaut John Glenn conducted eating experiments in orbit, Tang was selected for the me and was also used during some Gemini flights. A NASA engineer working on Gemini explained how and why it was used

Discovery final flight for NASA 2/24/2011

NASA is ending its space shuttle program this year after 30 years of spaceflight to make way for new exploration plans that call for sending astronauts to an asteroid by 2025 and to Mars in the 2030s. Once the shuttle fleet retires, NASA will rely on unmanned spacecraft built by Europe, Russia and Japan to deliver cargo to the space station until American-built commercial spacecraft become available

Japan may send chatty humanoid tweet-bot to space

Japan's space agency is considering putting a talking humanoid robot on the International Space Station to watch the mission while astronauts are asleep, monitor their health and stress levels and communicate to Earth through the micro-blogging site Twitter. Japan's space agency JAXA announced this week that it is looking at a plan to send a humanoid robot to the space station in 2013 that could communicate with the ground through Twitter - primarily feeding photos, rather than original ideas - and provide astronauts with "comfort and companionship."

Gov't says up to 10% in US lack good Internet

As many as one in 10 Americans can't get Internet connections that are fast enough for common online activities such as watching video or teleconferencing, and two thirds of schools have broadband connections that are too slow to meet their needs. Those are some of the conclusions from the Commerce Department as it unveiled a detailed, interactive online map showing what types of high-speed Internet connections are available - or missing - in every last corner of the country

Between 5 percent and 10 percent of Americans lack access to broadband access that is fast enough to handle downloads of some Web pages, photos and video or simple video conferencing services

Two-thirds of schools surveyed have Internet connections that are slower than 25 megabits per second - well below the 50- to 100-megabit connections that state education technology directors say are needed to serve roughly 1,000 students

Only 4 percent of libraries have connection speeds that are faster than 25 megabits

Only 36 percent of Americans have access to wireless connections that are fast enough to be considered fourth generation, with download speeds of at least 6 megabits per second, although 95 percent of Americans have access to third-generation wireless service.

Obama’s Tech Toast

Oracle, Netflix, Apple, Facebook and Yahoo, chief executives, the event was meant to discuss new investments in Silicon Valley

The president specifically discussed his proposals to invest in research and development and expand incentives for companies to grow and hire

The group also discussed the importance of new investments in education and the new White House initiative Startup America, a partnership with the private sector aimed at supporting new startups and small businesses.”

Starbucks smartphone payment plain.

The app displays a barcode on the phone's screen. The customer then holds the phone in front of the scanner, which reads the barcode and processes the sale against his or her prepaid Starbucks account

According to Starbucks, this payment option is available at the company's 6,800 U.S. stores, plus more than 1,000 Target locations. The Starbucks app is available for many iPhone, Android and BlackBerry models.

Over the next few years, we'll see retailers, credit card companies and other major players experiment with new approaches to mobile payments, point-of-sale discounts or upgrades

·      Holy woolly bully Batman a Woolly Mammoth Cloning? 
      A team of Japanese, Russian, and American scientists based out of Japan's Kyoto University is working to clone a big hairy beast from the Earth's last ice age. If a cloned embryo can be created, we need to discuss, before transplanting it into the womb, how to breed [the mammoth] and whether to display it to the public. After the mammoth is born, we'll examine its ecology and genes to study why the species became extinct and other factors

Michael Isabelle, Plane Passenger, Punches Flight Attendant When Blocked By Food Cart 

Michael Isabelle of Massachusetts started the mayhem around 6am on an American Airlines flight from Rio de Janeiro. Isabelle kicked the cart repeatedly until it fell over and punched the hapless flight attendant, Carlos Carrico, in the stomach.
